Lupus
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes the immune system to turn against the body, harming healthy cells and tissues. Additionally, Lupus is a rheumatic disease, which causes severe aches, pain and stiffness in the joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. This disease is an equal opportunity infector and does not discriminate based on race, gender or age. It does however, seem to prefer to feed upon women and children. Pollyanna wrote the foundation's theme song "Fly to Heaven" in memory of her sister, which will also be used to raise money for their cause. Pollyanna is also a Dorough Lupus Support Group Volunteer. Dorough Lupus Foundation Support Group Arnold Palmer Hospital, together with the Dorough Lupus Foundation, has initiated a support group to address the social and emotional needs of children, teens and adults living with lupus. This is a wonderful opportunity for adolescents and adult lupus patients, with their family members to come together, learn, share stories and advice in a safe atmosphere, staffed with medical professionals. Each month a different speaker presents useful information pertaining to lupus, to benefit the entire group. Bilingual Counselors are also available at every meeting. Counseling for the support groups are separated age appropriately to insure a comfortable environment for all. Remember, "You are not alone." The Dorough Lupus Foundation Support Group meets at 7pm every fourth Tuesday of each month. Hosted at Arnold Palmer Hospital (APH) for Children and Women, located in downtown Orlando area on Miller Street, and Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC).
